College of Engineering

College of Engineering

Located in the Cheonan Campus of Sangmyung University, the School of Engineering is small but strong. With the strong will of the university and the constant efforts of engineering professors, the School is building its competitiveness in the engineering curriculum and educational infrastructure, industry-academic cooperation with regional industries, and students’ employment upon graduation. Sangmyung University’s School of Engineering pursues two goals: "To be the best university in the Chungcheong area" and "a university centered on industry-academic cooperation" under the vision of a "technology school that fosters demand-oriented creative professional engineers.” In order to achieve this goal systematically, the School has established the Engineering Education Innovation Center directly under the university president, carrying out various innovation projects necessary for engineering education such as reorganization of curriculum, development of teaching materials for engineering education, retraining of professors, and revitalization of industry-academic cooperation. The Center for Engineering Education Innovation has received funding from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology since June 2007 in recognition of its achievements. Sangmyung University's School of Engineering helps students achieve their dreams of becoming professional engineers who will contribute to the development of national and local industries, while fulfilling its role as a cradle producing creative engineers with practical skills. Sangmyung University Cheonan Campus will be supported by the Ministry of Education for five years as the following 3 projects were selected in the Ministry of Education’s specialization projects for metropolitan/provincial universities

  • Project to nurture creative human resources and convergence environment / ecology infrastructure of creative economy technology (Department of Construction System Engineering)
  • Project agency to nurture high-quality human resources in 4C-based smart device engineering (Department of Information Communication Engineering)
  • Project agency to nurture convergent and creative human resources to lead the creative economy

Students will learn various programming languages such as C, C ++ and JAVA as well as basic theories such as electronic circuits and digital systems, along with various application techniques such as internet, embedded system, computer vision and mobile software. The major they will have learned and refined is eventually structured and put into practical use through a capstone design process. It provides field and demand-oriented education based on cooperation with various electronics industries and IT industries.

Through internships, on-the-job training, industry expert seminars, CEO lectures, and various other industry-academy exchange programs offered by the Department, students receive support for employment after graduation.

Department of Software

The Department of Software is a core department of the PRIME Division, which seeks to train creative professionals with theoretical and practical skills in software development for the intelligence information society of the 21st century.

Software plays an important role in many places of our society such as the Internet of things, information security systems, big data collection and analysis, intelligent systems, automobiles, robots, automation equipment, etc. In this Department, students develop creative problem-solving skills, software design, and development abilities based on practical skills, academic foundation and experimental practice.

It provides on-site and demand-oriented education based on a curriculum focusing on design and experiments as well as cooperation with various software companies and IT industries. The Department is also offering various practical training programs such as field work projects, internships, expert seminars, and CEO lectures and is running a graduate laboratory for detailed research in software technology.

The Department of Software has been selected as a "Prime Project" recipient by the Ministry of Education which awards 500 million KRW of funding a year, and has, thus, built excellent support conditions to educate talented human resources.

Department of Smart Information Communication Engineering

This Department aims to nurture professionals with a service mind and teamwork spirit to lead the knowledge information society of the 21st century.

It focuses on basic knowledge in computer programming and microprocessors as well as expertise in robot vision, voice / image processing, information security, wireless communication, system on chip (SoC), and communication networks. The Department has the following goals:

  • Students will acquire knowledge in mathematics and basic sciences to become talented human resources capable of recognizing and solving technical problems in the ICT field.
  • Students will receive education in theory and practical skills through comprehensive design and practice.
  • Students will be trained to become talented professionals with practical knowledge close to commercialization through the revitalization of industry-academic-research collaboration.

Department of Management Engineering

The Department of Management Engineering aims to nurture professionals with a business acumen that combines management knowledge and engineering knowledge.

The Department’s subjects cover marketing, accounting, financial engineering, and management science for students to develop leadership and creative problem-solving skills for organizational management.

After graduation, students have entered management-related fields such as management consulting, the service industry, financial institutions, logistics and distribution companies, and manufacturing.

Department of Green Chemical Engineering

The Department of Green Chemical Engineering focuses on environmental, renewable energy, and biotechnology that determine the quality of human life based on traditional chemical engineering.

This Department aims to foster chemical engineering engineers with in-depth expertise and excellent practical abilities that can play a pivotal role in the specialized chemical industry. In this Department, students will cultivate qualifications as professional chemical engineers with theoretical and practical competence through theory classes and experiment practicums that they can apply to specialized fields such as the prevention and control of environmental pollution, renewable energy and biotechnology, through the systematic education offering basic and core courses in chemical engineering.

Department of Construction System Engineering

Civil Engineering involves the design, construction and supervision of basic indirect capital facilities in society. Some people call civil engineering as the surgeon of the earth.

It is a discipline to acquire knowledge in infrastructure such as roads, ports, airports, dams, tunnels, subways, canals and railways. Such infrastructures require safe and economic designs because they are large-scale.

Although designing and installation safely is simple, economical design and installation are not. The Department of Construction System Engineering teaches students the basic knowledge and professional skills for safe, economical design, construction and supervision.

Department of Information Security Engineering

This Department fosters top experts in information security, which is the core technology of the information society.

To this end, the Department operates a 3D curriculum for the information security technology, and all members strive to develop creative thinking skills and practical skills. Students who have successfully completed its curriculum are expected to have advanced knowledge in areas such as encryption technology, information security system design technology, development technology of information security programs, security chip design technology, and internet security technology to become information security experts in these fields.

Department of System Semiconductor Engineering

In the coming future smart society, the ability and evaluation methods necessary for engineers in South Korea will not be based on "the development of existing knowledge and hierarchy-based evaluation to obtain one’s own share from the limited pie, but the self-initiated design ability in engineering assignments and capability-based evaluation”.

In keeping with this paradigm shift, the Department of System Semiconductor Engineering prepares students to design their own engineering problems in system semiconductor design, the foundation of the smart industry, so that they can prepare for the future smart society.

The Department also focuses on basic knowledge in microprocessors, semiconductor properties and process, SoC, non-memory semiconductor design, and applicability in voice / image processing, wireless communication, and networks. In addition, this Department was selected as a "Prime Project" recipient by the Ministry of Education which awards 500 million KRW of funding a year, and has, thus, built excellent support conditions to educate talented human resources. It has employment agreements with medium-sized companies such as domestic fabless and design houses, guaranteeing employment of many students upon their graduation.

The Department plans to expand employment agreements to large companies so that graduates can join leading companies such as Samsung Electronics.

Department of Human Intelligence Robot Engineering

The robotic industry is a promising field that has a steady growth rate of 21% per year in the domestic market and 10% per year in the global market.

The AI field is also drawing huge attention and is expected to see rapid growth in the future. In particular, according to the projection on labor supply and demand by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, it is expected that there will be a shortage of 78,000 people in mechanical and metal engineering and 73,000 in electrical and electronics engineering.

A report by a public institution on industries and occupations predicts Korean society to have an absolute shortage of future robot labor soon. This labor shortage is caused by qualitative and quantitative inconsistencies among the personnel who have practical experience in the robotics and artificial intelligence fields based on convergence technology. In response, the Department of Human Intelligence Robot Engineering aims to foster technology-intensive and global experts in the 21st century for intelligent robots and artificial intelligence, the core of high added-values in the future. The Department strives to cultivate professionals in industries through practical training of creative new technology, practical training programs based on the demand of industry-academic-research, and various student support programs for employment.
